The touchy-feely, quasi-spiritual trend of getting Asian-language tattoos became popular in the 1990s. For many youngsters, or for people who wanted to feel young, a tat with the characters for “peace” and “truth” seemed just the thing.

  • Ghost in the wall? No... man in the chimney!


    A burglar who got stuck in a chimney on Sunday morning was rescued after a woman who lives in the building next door heard a voice coming from within the walls and called for help, police said.

    City emergency officials, who heard the whimpering, broke through the brick chimney of the residential building on the West Side of Manhattan and used ropes to pull out the man, who was arrested, police said.

    The man, about 1.6m tall and weighing 50kg, was covered in soot and grime. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.

  • Gun At Auction Discharges, Two Injured


    An auction to benefit a family whose home burned down went off with a bang. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt.

    Darrell Clasen, of La Motte, and John Moellers, of Bellevue, were both shot when a 10-gauge shotgun accidentally discharged at the auction on Sunday.

    Police said a 10-year-old boy put a shell in the gun, which was on a table of things to be auctioned. A man later picked up the gun and it discharged, police said.

    Saddam novel published in Japan


    A novel penned by Saddam Hussein in the run-up to the 2003 invasion that ended his dictatorship will be released for the first time abroad in a Japanese translation, the publisher said on Friday. The heavily symbolic novel, about an outsider who plots to overthrow a town before eventually being defeated by an Arab warrior, has only been released in Iraq, but with its author’s name removed.

    The book, whose Arabic title translates as Damned One, Get Out of Here, will go on sale in Japan under the title The Dance of the Devil on May 19. Translated by a Japanese journalist, it will cost JPY 1,500 (EUR (EUR 10.50).

    Surgeons have reattached the penis of a Saudi man who paid the price for trying to have sex with his Filipina maid and she attacked him with a knife, a hospital source said on Monday.

    "This is a sophisticated operation. You are dealing with an organ in a difficult area and you want to try to return to its efficiency," said a spokesman at Riyadh's Takhassusi Hospital.

    Earlier this month newspapers reported that the maid removed her employer's manhood when he tried to molest her in the middle of the night as his wife was sleeping. The maid is now in police custody.

  • Woman finds semen in shoe after sleeping


    University police said they are looking for a man who is a possible suspect in connection with masturbating into a sleeping woman's shoe in Langsam Library.

    According to a police report, "an unknown person aroused himself sexually, leaving his semen on the complaintant's shoes without her permission in a public area that was likely to be viewed by others."

    Melissa Norris, the director of Library Communication, said Wednesday that the staff took action as soon as they found out about the offense.
