Squirrel takes out opera singer

The Squirrel Menace has struck again, this time in Finland - and now the furry psychopaths are targeting helpless opera singers.

Finnish opera singer Esa Ruuttunen was knocked unconscious and recieved a broken nose when a kamikaze squirrel launched the attack as he cycled to work.

The squirrel ran into the spokes of his bicycle as he journeyed to rehearsals at the Helsinki Opera House, leaving the singer concussed and in hospital.

The squirrel incident came just before of the world premiere of a new Finnish opera, Kaarmeen hetki (Hour of the Serpent), which is due to open on September 15.

However, it is not thought that the production will be delayed because of the rodent assault.

Two charged after beating teen with prosthetic leg

A southeast Missouri teenager is recovering after being attacked with his own prosthetic leg.

Michael Williams of Cape Girardeau was attacked around 1 a.m. Sunday in an apartment complex parking lot. Police say two other teens in a car pulled alongside Williams, an 18-year-old who is missing half his right arm and wears a prosthetic leg due to a birth defect.

One of the teens grabbed Williams' prosthetic leg and hit him with it.

Because the attack was apparently motivated by Williams' disability, police characterize it as a hate crime.

Seventeen-year-old Alexander Harris faces felony assault charges. The other teen, a 16-year-old boy, faces juvenile charges.

Williams had lip, jaw and neck injuries but no broken bones.

Love-smitten man tries to kidnap mannequin

A Japanese man was arrested after trying to steal a mannequin from a display window, claiming it was love at first sight, news reports said on Monday.

Shoji Shibuzaki (33) was arrested at 3am in the southern city of Maebara for allegedly trying to remove the mannequin from display at a community centre, a police official was quoted as saying in a report in the Asahi Shimbum newspaper.

"It was love at first sight," he reportedly told police after his arrest last week.

The unemployed man said he had spotted the mannequin, which was clad in a kimono, a few days earlier when passing and crafted his plan to haul it home.

But he told police he gave up the plan after he came closer and became disillusioned with the mannequin's supposed beauty.

"The mannequin looked eerie from close-up, and she seemed too heavy to carry her home," he was quoted as saying

Four charged in fatal beating of homeless man

A homeless man in Little Havana yelled a nasty pickup line at a young woman, enraging her so much that she and three friends beat him to death with a metal chair, a piece of steel rebar, a rock and a wooden stick, police said Tuesday.

The four friends, who grew up together and whose families attend the Church of the Soldiers of the Cross of Christ, have been charged with second-degree murder.

Police said the beating, which took place early Saturday, was so brutal that the 67-year-old victim's body struck and shattered an apartment building's glass door.

''It was pretty vicious,'' said Miami homicide Detective Freddy Ponce.

Janice Guillen, 18; her boyfriend Magdiel Wingfield, 28; and friends Jason Cardenas, 19, and Kevin Stone, 27, all remain in Miami-Dade County jails.

''We've all known them since they were little,'' said Cardenas' father, Benjamin Cardenas, a bishop at the Christian Evangelical church in Little Havana. Wingfield's father is a pastor there.

Girl, 11, sexually assaulted by 20 boys

An 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by as many as 20 boys as a 16-year-old girl watched and told her what sex acts to perform, authorities say in the latest mob attack to rock Milwaukee and set off another round of civic soul-searching.

"It almost leaves me speechless. It is just senseless acts of violence. It is inhumane. It is embarrassing to the city of Milwaukee and its people. ... There should be outrage," Barbara Nuell-Moore, director of the neighborhood-improvement group Project Respect.

The 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy have been charged in juvenile court in the attack, which authorities said took place on Monday in a house on the city's north side. A 40-year-old man who also had sex with the child may also be charged, authorities said.

As for the others, "we're dealing with a lot of nicknames so we're trying to track down these people," said prosecutor Matthew Torbenson.

Numerous violent crimes have shocked the city this summer, starting with a Memorial Day weekend in which 28 people were shot.
